The College English Department Ⅱoffers teaching to non-English major undergraduates at Hefei and Xuancheng campuses. Under the department are two teaching and research sections respectively for course teaching and for tests, examinations, and competitions. With a faculty of 43 teachers, including 2 professors, 14 associate professors and 27 lecturers, this department provides basic courses such as English for General Purposes 1, 2 and 3, as well as advanced courses like English for Intercultural Communication and English for General Academic Purposes. Moreover, there are two specialized teams for teaching quality improvement – one is for English for General Purposes 1 and the other for English for Intercultural Communication.
This department is proud of a faculty – most of the members received advanced study or training either at home or abroad, all having solid professional expertise. Many of them have published academic works and articles in either domestic or foreign journals in recent years. What is more, the teachers have led or taken part in many academic research projects, including some on the list of the Humanities and Social Sciences Projects of the Ministry of Education and some of the Quality Engineering Projects sponsored by Anhui provincial government. The members have been actively involved in various planned English teaching materials and textbooks as chief editors or cooperative compiling members, and led or participated in producing quite a few professional MOOCs, public MOOCs and SPOC courses. This department prioritizes teaching research, deepens teaching reform, explores new ways for better teaching, and actively promotes the “Progressive Improvement Plan” for CET-4 and CET-6, so as to improve the teaching quality for students and make them more virtuous. Around a dozen teachers have won provincial or university online and offline teaching awards or honorary titles, demonstrating their rich and diverse teaching experience. Every year, they guide students to join in high-level English contests in different categories, achieving outstanding results with the joined efforts.
In the 14th Five-Year Plan period, this department will adapt to the needs of the times, enhance teachers' ethics, and reform college English courses. It will consolidate the foundation for the improvement of the education and teaching system of the university, which features moral education, ability fostering, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and for the implementation of the 2023 Talent Training Plan, so that the department can contribute more to the new development of the Double First-Class construction.
